Zack Rogow, Urban Tanka

his dream makes him smile
under a pastel-
yellow blanket
his head leaning
against a parking meter

on the sidewalk by the man
cocooned in his sleeping bag
I place a plastic container
with blueberries and toast
left over from my son’s breakfast

rousting the homeless
from their concrete beds
the police officer
walks the sun-sliced alleys
extremely slowly

twin ladies with identical
gray buns on Mission Street
pushing together
a shopping cart
draped with plastic bags

ten lanes rush the freeway
this September morning-
along the concrete divider
a narrow-brimmed straw hat
with a powder-blue band
